“0mm Brahmanandam Parama Sukhadam Kebalam Gyana Murtim Dwandatitam Gagana Sadursam Tatwa Masyadi Lakshyam Ekam Nityam Bimala Machalam Sarbadhi Sakshi Bhutm Bhabatitam Triguna Rahitam Sadguru Twam Namami .”
In this sacred land Bharat,The Nabadwipa Dham is still famous as a holy land at the footmark of Sri Sri Gaurang Dev. Thakur Sri Sri Nigamananda Saraswati Dev belonging to a Brahmin family adorned the lap of his mother Smt. Manikya Sundari Devi at the village Kutabpur in that sacred land of Nadiya district at 1287 sala of Jhulana Purnima Tithi. His father’s name is Sj Bhubana Mohana Chattopadhyaya. After horoscopical consideration his parents named the newly born as Nalinikanta(Nalini).
IThe sacred thread ceremony of Nalinikanta got solemnized when he attained the age of 11 . He was a very devoted child. Once at his child hood he got a blessed chance to see the goddess Bhagabati in real while paying the evening light at Devi temple. But Nalinikant could not get the chance to see the goddess Bhagabati again after the sudden demise of his beloved mother Smt Manikya Sundari Devi. Because at that time he was studying under the strict guidance of his aunts at Radhakantpur. At the final journey of life his beloved mother Smt Manikya Sundari Devi told Nalinikanta that she had surrendered him before the lap of Jaganmata. Keeping deep trust in his mother’s words Nalinikant prayed desperately before the goddess Bhagabati ,but he could not able to see her in real. After not getting the chance to see and to experience the Jaganmata , Nalinikant became more disturbed and the atheist thoughts came rise in him gradually. He thought there is neither any parakal . Nor any close relationship of human being with God. To live the life truthfully and to follow the path of truth soulfully is the one and only duties for life. He considered that the real meaning of Dharma is character building and charity or benevolence. So he decided to live his life purely in the path of truth and honesty. By using his divine character and behaviours he had brought back the life of a lower bound Brahmin widow lady to the path of truth and divinity. From his childhood he had deep interest in village construction work and social reforms.
At the age of 17 the marriage of Nalinikanta got solemnized with an extremely beautiful 11 years old girl named Sudhanshubala (Sudha Devi) ; the eldest daughter of Sj Baidyanath Mukhopadhyaya of Hali Sahar. Between that mean time Nalinikanta passed the exam of survey and did the job of oversearing. But he left that job due to unsatisfaction. After then while he was working at Dinazpur Jamindari in Narayanpur kacheri ; one evening he suddenly got surprised by looking the shaya murti (an idol of shadow) of his beloved wife Smt Sudha Devi. After some moment that shaya murti got disappeared. The next day, he went to his village and there he came to know that his beloved wife smt Sudha devi was no more than this materialistic world. This incident made a strong and credible impact on parakal. He came back to his usual working life after joining the theosophical society and gaining knowledge about the relationship between the mrutyu (death) and parakal. In order to meet his late wife smt Sudhanshu Bala Devi in real , he practised for to bring back the spirit of his late wife through the medium and to see her in real ; but that practise could not accomplished him. While practising theosophy he understood that the direct knowledge could be acquired only by the blessings of hindu yogis. So after returning from Mandraz he made himself busy for searching hindu yogis. At the mean time he met with Sri Purnananda swami a highly qualified monk . according to his advice Nalinikanta came to know that his practice could be perfect if he get sadguru and by his blessing if he could involve in the sadhana of Maha Shakti. So he woke up in the same and began to pray fervently before God to get the sadguru and guru mantra.
One night Nalinikanta saw ,that a divine person is standing before his bed. He gave him a one lettered mantra typed in a Bilwa patra and told him “Batsa ! accept this as your mantra” and then got disappeared within a moment, in order to know about the secret of this one lettered mantra Nalinikanta renounced the world searched every where but no one explained him the secret of this mantra. In deep frustration , he decided to commit suicide. One night while he was in deep sleep , he saw in his dream vision that an old man was saying to him “Baba ! your Guru is the Bamakshepa of Tarapith.”
He ascended to Bamakshepa in Taripitha of Birbhum district. Siddha mahatma Bamakshepa happily promised to teach him the sadhana system and by gaining his blessings within few days Nalinikanta saw Devi Tara in form of Sudha Devi and converged with her. Being unable to touch the Goddess despite repeated darsan his mind became disturbed again. In order to find out the secret about it ,under teachings of the Tantric Guru Bamakshepa ; he travelled to many parts of India in search of the Ascetic Guru ; and finally he met with Swami Sachidananda Saraswati Dev at Puskar Tirth and there he surrendered himself .Nalinikanta knew that the Mahatma who had given him the Mantra in his dream vision was none but this Swami Sachidananda Saraswati. Nalinikantaa was able to satisfy his Gurudev by performing various labours on his orders and mastered the most intimate secrets of knowledge within a few days. So Guru Sachidananda Saraswati dev gave Sanyasa Dikshya and named him NIGAMANANDA.
After taking sanyasa, Nigamananda travelled around the charidham to obtain knowledge at the behest of Gurudev. But in order to internalize the knowledge he acquired and getting the command of Gyani Guru Sachidananda he set out on a quest for The Yogi Guru.
Eventually during Yogi Guru’s quest a number of piligrims along with the sanyasi’s at Durgam Puskar Tirtha suffered from dysentery. Because of this his fellow monks deserted him. Finding no other way Nigamananda took shelter in a nearby hill settlement. Within a few days he was free from disease and began to enjoy the beautiful sceneries of that dense forest. It was not possible to go back to the place from that remote forest area. So he was forced to stay in the shelter of tribals in that hill settlement from the month of kartik to the next month. One day he was so enthralled by Banani’s beautiful silent vision that it became his out of concern even though it was evening , so he did not leave and spent the night in a bush hut.In the mid night Paribrajak had a vision of a huge Tejian saint at that bushy root and followed him at his back and call. Then the Sadhu Mahatma gave his identity to the young Paribrajak and gave him shelter in his own cottage and promised him for teaching. After staying in the shelter of sadhu; swamiji taught the practice of yoga sadhana and under his command again came back to the locality . His Yoga teacher name is Udasinacharya Sumeru Das jee Maharaj.
After coming to the locality, Nigamananda stayed st Haripur village in Pabana district and did the Hatha Yoga sadhana . but here he faced various difficulties so he left that place and went to Kamakshya and there he stayed at the house of Jagneswar Biswas, a high ranked Govt. officer. In his house he again kept himself busy in doing his Sadhana and there he attained Sabikalpa Samadhi and again in the mountain of Kamakshya he merged himself in Enlightment and after Nirbikalpa Samadhi ; “I am the Guru” bearing this godly in him he again came back to the locality, “who am I “ in order to know its meaning he renounced the world and became Ascetic ; and “I am the Guru” adorning this knowledge and feelings he again came back to the locality. After gaining this he realized that he had attained perfection.
Bearing the pride of perfection Nigamananda ascended to Kasi Dham. There Devi Annapurna the Godess of Kashi Dham awakening the imperfection in him told him that his Knowledge is incomplete; just as it is true that Gods name has no form ; like this it is also true that his name has form. He who knows both these thoughts is full of knowledge. It is true that you have received Brahma Gyana but you have not yet received the Bhagabat gyana lies in AbaraBrahma Gyana or Prema Bhakti ; so you are incomplete.
Then Sri Sri Nigamananda dev received AbaraBrahma Gyana by the blessing of Prema siddha Gauri Maa and reached at the highest perfection. After gaining knowledge from Mahasiddhamayee Gauri Maa ; gyana siddha Nigamananda became Prema siddha and merged himself in deep Samadhi.
Maha vidya Tara the Goddess of swami Nigamananda Saraswati dev gave him the direct vision and said “You performed your sadhana in order to get your beloved wife back. I will give you the same vision in the same way to see me again”. Jagatguru Shiva is the incarnation of Mahashakti. You are Shiva, so you are the supreme master. The people of the world are your children. You go to the localities and impart your knowledge to the devotees. Nigamananda felt himself completed or fulfilled by Tara Devi’s words.
Having a strong desire to meet his Gurudev , Swami Sachidananda , Nigamananda visited the Kumbha mela. At Kumba mela he first paid his regards to his Gurudev Swami Sachidananda jee Maharaj then to the Jagat Guru Sankaracharya so other monk objected his such type of submissions. Swami Nigamananda Saraswati Dev satisfied the Jagat Guru by answering the questions. Jagat Guru ordered Guru Sachidananda Jee Maharaj to get him decorated with the title of Paramahansa. With the solemn consent of the saint congregation. Guru Sachidananda Saraswati Dev conferred the title of paramahansa on his disciple. Swami Sri Sri Nigamananda Saraswati Dev was crowned as paramahansa and carried the Gurubhara and established himself as Guru.
Going to the locality , Sri Sri Thakur Nigamananda saw that the voice of Tyagi and Bairagi was neglected and ignored by the common people. Everyone is anxious for getting sudden wealth and prosperity.
Then he established the Shanti Dham at Kokilamukh district in Assam. In order to bring the country men from Prabruti path to Nibruti path and also to change in the views and vision of common people. He published Yogi Guru, Gyani Guru, Brahmacharya Sadhana, Tantrika Guru, Premika Guru like this many more sacred books and a monthly journal Named “Arya Darpan”. He organized sangha and Bhakta Sammilani for the spread of tru education and the propagation of Sanatan Dharma.
His aim was to build an ideal group of society or his devotees to lead an ideal family life, to combine the power of spiritual associations and to share or exchange spiritual feelings among the disicples . Sri Sri Thakur praised his disciples and devotees to serve the people as in the form of Narayan seva and to live in wisdom. Swami jee remaining in this feelings in a few days he was able to spread his message in Banga, Bihar, Assam and Brahma des. Spreading his ideas widely he left the Assam monastery and spent the last part of his life in the hermitage of Puri Dham. Devotees were very much eager to read his books and to see him. Ordinary people found humanity and divinity in him flocked to him and took refuge in him. The devotees felt themselves lucky and blessed to have the sight , touch and bless of that great mans company.
He ordered the establishment of “Nilachala Saraswata Sangha” on his auspicious born day in the year of 1934 A.D. for the purpose of uniting the devotees and for the propagation of his spiritual ideas. His aim was to establish the power of the union and to exchange the ideas by following the ideals group of life.
That great soul took Maha Samadhi on 29th Margasira Sukla Chaturthi Tithi in the year 1935 A.D in a secluded room in that great city of Calcutta.
The nectar of that great mans words advices blossoms our heart and mind .
Sri Sri Thakur said “ Batsa ! I am and will be forever. To fullfill my will you must all unite and show respect my words and orders as like your Guru.
Sri Sri Thakur honoured the mothers and said “fill your heart with the love and light of motherhood. The holy image of God is not reflect anyone else except Janani twa. You are my intimate. Therefore you may spread the glory of Bhagawad in the world after burning yourselves in peace. Take care of your children as in the form of Bhagawad gyana. An woman’s birth will be different only if she can find her husband happy in the wisdom of Guru Brahma.
The great man is established in the form of Sadguru and remains immortal by chanting his “jayaguru” maha mantra. By chanting the “jayaguru” Maha mantra Gurudev has given various teachings on how one can feel the God in his heart and spirit.

The major catalyst for fructifying the noble wishes of Sri Sri Thakur in the pious Utakala bhumi or the present day Odisha, was Sri Durga Charan Mohanty or very fondly known as ‘Bhai’ or ‘the elder brother’, among the devotees of Nilachala Saraswata Sangha. Bhai was born in the year 1912 on an auspicious day in the month of Kartika, Sukla Paksha in Mesha Rashi. He was born in a little known village called Biratunga near Puri, the holy abode of Shri Jagannath Mahaprabhu. His father’s name was Gunanidhi Mohanty and his mother’s name was Sundaramani Devi. After completing his lower primary and upper primary classes, he went to Puri for secondary education. Right from his childhood he was very fond of reading spiritual books and Scriptures. During that time he could also read Bengali books along with his mother tongue Odia and English. While studying in Puri he often used to go to a library called Raghunandan library for reading various books. One day, while reading in the library, he came across a book written by Sri Sri Thakur named ‘Yogi Guru’. He was captivated and mesmerised by seeing the picture or Sribigraha of Sri Sri Thakur and his name in that book to such an extent that one day he discreetly tore the Bigraha of Sri Shree Thakur from that book and started worshipping him at his home and prayed for getting his mercy and Darshan very soon. He wrote a letter to Sri Sri Thakur in the address given in the book and got to know that Thakur Maharaj was staying very near to him at ‘Nilachal Kuteera’ near Swarga Dwar in Puri. It was 30th of March 1930 Thursday, the day on which he could get darshan of Thakur Maharaj for the first time and dedicated himself at the lotus feet of Sri Sri Thakur and accepted Him as his Guru for eternity. He continued to meet Thakur ji and started his sadhana or spiritual practices under the guidance and invaluable advices of Guru Maharaj. He did not even write anything in his exam papers for matriculation as he apprehended that he would lose the opportunity of getting the association of his beloved Guru during those days and he might have to leave Puri if he passes the examination for furtherance of his studies. He considered Thakur ji as his Guru, Friend, father and mother, relative ..everything and the incarnation of The Supreme Lord himself. After preparing himself as per the advices and wishes of his beloved Guruji, he went on to become the Sampadak or the Secretary and Parichalak or Chief Administrator/Manager of Nilachal Saraswata Sangha by dedicating each moment of his life to fulfil the wishes of Thakur ji for about half a century period and made the Sangha as a notable and noble institution. Sri Sri Thakur once told him ‘I already have my devotees, tell people about me only when they ask about me’. Obeying this piece of advice, he didn’t utter anything about his Guru till anybody expressly inquired about Him. After a long wait of about 7 years, in a scheme of things, Kashinath Ratha, the Jamindar of a village named Patelia asked him about Thakurji and he narrated few life events of Sri Sri Thakur as read earlier and heard from Thakur ji about himself. Kashinatha Ratha was so impressed and enthralled after listening about Thakurji that he urged Bhai to write a full- fledged life history of Thakur ji in Odia. Bhai then with great enthusiasm started writing a complete and the first ever life history of Thakurji in Odia and named it as ‘Sri Sri Thakur Nigamananda’ in the year 1942. The book was written in the form of a novel and the language and presentation of the events were so lucid and impressive that it has been a great medium in the history of Nilachal Saraswata sangha for the widespread publicity of the high moral ideals and nectarine advices of Thakur Maharaj. After publication of the above book, devotees and spirituality inclined people in great numbers from different corners of the state reached out and met Bhai to clear their various doubts and suspicions. To further spread and familiarise the religiously minded people and devotees about the philosophy, purpose, ideologies of Sri Sri Thakur Maharaj, he translated the holy books authored by Thakurji himself, namely Tantrik Guru, Yogi Guru, Gyani Guru, Premika Guru, Bramhacharya Sadhana etc. to odia language and edited and wrote books like Nigam Upadesh, Nigam Tatwa, Nilachal Bani, Sansara Pathe, Saraswata Sangha Niti etc. taking references from various books written by Thakur ji and his advices. Apart from the above, he published a quarterly magazine named as ‘Sangha Sebaka’ for about a period of 27 years taking references from various scriptures as Veda, Upanishad, Bhagawad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, Ramayan , Mahabharata and many more, which has enriched and further glorified the spiritual literature of the Odia language. In addition to above, he presented and established the ideology of Sri Sri Thakur, which is a harmonious blending of the opinion of Sri Adi Shankaracharya (Sankaranka Mata), i.e. highest enlightenment (Gyana) and the path of Sriman Mahaprabhu Gaurangadev (Gauranganka Patha), i.e. path of devotion/seva (Prema) in the minds of many by quoting various references from different religious scriptures as mentioned above. The advice of Thakur Maharaj to worship him by following the local/regional rituals of the place where one belongs to, Bhai also established Gruhasan (Establishment of Guru’s abode in one’s home), Sanghasana (Establishment of Guru’s abode collectively by three or more devotees in a place), Kendra Asana (Establishment of Guru’s abode collectively by all the devotees of Nilanchal Saraswata Sangha) and explained the way to worship Sri Sri Thakur, rules and regulations for performing the service in those asanas and practically implemented the same. Sri Sri Thakur started Bhakta Sammilani, an annual congregation of his devotees, in order to express the spiritual experiences and feelings among each other. Thakurji once said, ‘even if I had not done anything in this world, only Bhakta Sammilani would have kept my memory alive.’ Sri Sri Thakur personally ordered to organise Sammilani in Odisha by representing himself on behalf of the devotees of the state as the host of the great congregation. Bhai spearheaded the Bhakta Sammilani in Odisha which has been conducted during Magha Purnima every year from 1964 till date. Bhai in order to spread Nigam Darshana or the philosophy of Thakur Maharaj created many sangha by travelling even to extremely remote locations in Odisha and explained various intricacies of performing seva (service) to many devotees. Whoever have got the opportunity to listen to his philosophical discussions on Gurutatwa and other spiritual topics, they cannot forget his simple yet sweet words and comparisons to understand difficult philosophical conclusions like Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, charismatic and enlightening expressions, depth of his arguments appealing to all kinds of listeners. With his great endeavours, he could establish cooperative society, schools, post office, medical and nice roads to his birthplace, Biratunga. Many devotees, scholars, spiritual seekers reached out to Bhai to get solutions to various problems. Even noted physician Mr. Antony travelled all the way from Canada to Biratunga to get the noble association of Bhai to quench his thirst for spiritual knowledge. Bhai was the Rakhya-kavach or the protection shield for the devotees. Being empowered with inconceivable powers through his Guru Bhakti or extreme devotion to his Guru, he never aspired for name, fame and publicity. Even without having no desire for self-establishment, he established himself among all by his selfless deeds and activities by fulfilling wishes of his spiritual master. Even though he always kept all his attainments and accomplishments very secret, but with his practices, his omniscience was automatically felt and experienced by the devotees. Even though Bhai left his material body in the year 1985, he is considered as the eternal Administrator (Nitya Parichalaka) for the devotees of the sangha and is revered and respected for his dedication and selfless contribution for spreading the ideologies of Sri Sri Thakur in the Utkala Bhumi. Without him, we can say, the residents of Odisha would definitely have been deprived of the opportunity of being acquainted with the invaluable philosophy of Sri Sri Thakur Maharaj, serving his lotus feet and expressing their love and gratitude towards their Guru and chanting the sacred hymn in their everyday prayer: Twameva Mata Cha Pita Twameva Twameva Bandhu Cha Sakha Twameva Twameva Vidya Dravinam Twameva Twameva Sarvam Mam Dev Deva You alone are my mother, You alone my father You alone are my family, You alone my friend You alone are my knowledge, You alone my wealth You are everything to me, O Lord of Lords You alone

‘Neelachal Saraswat Sangh’ was founded by Paramahansha Paribrajakacharya Shrimat Swami Nigamananda Saraswati Deva on the auspicious occasion of His 53rd birth day on 24th August, 1934, Julana Purnima, at ‘Neelachal Kutir’, Puri. So far as history records, Shri Shri Thakur Nigamananda is the only saint in the world who got perfection or highest spiritual goal in ‘Tantra’, ‘Jnana’, ‘Yoga’ and ‘Prema’. He is also the only saint in world who returned from ‘ Nirbikalpa Samadhi’ with the feeling that he is ‘The Universal Guru’ i.e the Supreme Being. He is also the only saint in the world who realized Himself as the ‘Parama Purusha or Parama Beramha’ or the Supreme Being and ‘Mahamaya ’ (Dive Mother or creator of the universe) owes allegiance to Him. He, thus, advocated for Guruvada and predicted that if universal brotherhood is to be achieved anytime it would be possible through Guruvada because every religion believes in Guruvada (preceptorship). He advocated that every religion is true and the practitioner of any faith can truly realize the ecstasy of his faith if truly practice the tenets of his own religion. Universal brotherhood, thereby, can be achieved when the narrowness is vanished from the mind of a person who is truly religious to his own religion and respects other religions equally.
Paramahansha Paribrajakacharya Shrimat Swami Nigamananda Saraswati Deva, was born on 19th August, 1980 in Qutubpur village of Mehrpur Sub Division, now in Bangladesh. He left the mortal human frame on 29th November, 1935 in Kolkata. His eternal presence is being realized, even today, by many people even other than his followers around the world. His followers are realizing Him as their ‘Guru’ (preceptor) and ‘Ista’ (tutelary deity) even today.
Briefly with three objectives of (1) spreading and propagation of ‘Sanatan Dharma’, (2) Spreading of ‘Sat Sikshya’ and (3) selfless service (Sheba) of all living beings, He started His spiritual journey by establishing an Ashram (monastery), at Durgapur, Comila, now in Bangladesh, on 3rd May, 1908, Akshya Tritiya. After closing down of the Ashram at Durgapur for various reasons, he founded ‘Shanti Ashram’ (Now Assam Bangiya Sarswat Math) on 21st April, 1912, Akshya Tritiya, at Kokilamukh near Jorhat in Assam state. Over there He founded ‘Guru Bramha Ashan’ which is the symbol of non-communal nature of his ideology. People other than Hindus used to come for his advice and were returning with satisfaction when they were enlightened about the issues they were putting before Him.
In 1912, He introduced ‘Sarbabhoumya Bhakta Sammilani’ ( Annual congregation of His devotees) on X-mass holidays every year for interaction among the devotees themselves and with Shri Shri Thakur regarding their spiritual development; especially (a) Adarsha Gruhastha Jiban Gathan ( ideally virtuous household life based on His ideologies), Sangha Shaktir Pratistha ( Strengthening union of the devotees as a means of social change ) and Bhaba Binimay (exchange of spiritual feelings and experiences for mutual benefits). Shri Shri Thakur expected return of Rishi Yug (ancient ages) and wanted his disciples and devotees to conduct their life accordingly. He also expected that His disciples and devotees should lead the life of ancient ‘Rishis’ in that they would have Adarsha children and Adarsha children would form a Adarsha society and Adharsha country.
Shri Shri Thakur had written four books on Tantra, Jnana, Yoga and Prema which are the cream of all the scriptures of Sanatan Dharma in order to remove the strange ideas of so called Hindus who are either following traditional Hindu rites and rituals blindly or are conducting their lives as per western culture and education who are sceptic about their religion and to create an awareness among them about Hinduism in true sense. He clearly, categorically and emphatically stressed that the people in the contemporary society lack the essential energy (physical and mental) required for practicing the methods available under Sanatan Dharma and more particularly in those four books. At all times and even during ‘Dikshya’ (initiation), for the said reasons he was advising his disciples and devotees that no ‘Sadhana / Bhajan’ (dedicated practices or recitals) would ever fetch them their ultimate goal, but they can achieve or realize the fruits of meditation, dedication or austerity of lakhs of rebirths the moment they please the Guru. ‘Guru Krupa’ is the mainstay and ‘Siddhi’, Sadhan/Bhajan is only a salvo or token.
After firmly creating a vast field of his philosophy with thousands followers and number of Ashrams in the States of Assam and Bengal Shri Shri Thakur decided to stay at a lonely place and brood over the spiritual progress of his followers. While contemplating to come to Puri, in His own words, Shri Shri Thakur revealed that seeds had been sown and a vast field of His ideology had been created in Bengal and Assam and it would fructify in Utkal Pradesh (Odisha).
Neelachal Dham or Puri was his ultimate choice. Initially towards the end of 1921 He remained in Puri in different rented Dharmasalas / houses till purchase of a house in 1924 which He named as ‘Neelachal Kutir’. He started living in the ‘Neelachal Kutir’ from 14th April, 1924 (Ist Baisakh, 1331) permanently and thenceforth from there he was visiting different places like Saraswat Math, Gurudham, Ashrams, Bhakata Sammilani, Haridwar, Kashi, houses of devotees in Bengal and Assam on His mission. In the year 1924, after coming to Puri, Shri Shri Thakur had given written directions for care and management of The Saraswat Math and institutions thereunder through a Trust Deed with 11 members as trustees. Still He continued till his heavenly abode he was taking care to solve different issues in Assam and Bengal through letters and personal visits.
In Neelachal Kutir Shri Shri Thakur, was not meeting any person even His disciples and devotees strictly without His prior permission. Towards early 1930, with His permission, some school students namely S/Shri Durga Charan Mohanty, Govinda Chandra Pattnaik, Ekadashi Harichandin, Nrupal Ji started coming daily to Neelachal Kutir. With purity of their love, devotion, submissiveness and allegiance they became very nearer to Shri Shri Thakur. Spiritually they were so closer to Shri Shri Thakur that not only they could resist Darshan ( meeting) of Shri Shri Thakur but also Shri Shri Thakur wanted them to meet Him every day when he remained in Puri. In the evening of 24th August, 1934 , on the sacred occasion of Julan Purnima and His Birthday, He addressed the disciples and devotees assembled in Neelachal Kutir for His worship that He was inspired and got urge within Him to organize those who are really dependent on him for their spiritual development. He stressed that all his devotees in Odisha must lead their lives strictly as per his ideologies. By the time some senior devotees and school students from Odisha had got ‘Dikshya’ from Shri Shri Thakur and became his disciples. The Advice of Shri Shri Thakur on the said day and thereafter till His heavenly abode on 29th November, 1935 is foundation of the ‘Neelachal Saraswat Sangh’ (NSS). Shri Shri Thakur appointed Shri Banamali Dash, a renowned advocate, as President and Shri Dash appointed Shri Durga Charan Mohanty as Secretary of NSS. There were about 28 disciples and devotees at that time.
On the foundation day of NSS and thereafter, Shri Shri Thakur had unambiguously asserted
and expected following objectives from the devotees of NSS:
Once in Saraswat Math Shri Shri Thakur expressed with great grief and agony that he created thousands followers there, but did not find a single person as real ‘Manushya’ or human being in spiritual sense. He would be searching for a ‘Manushya’. Again on 6th November, 1935 Shri Shri Thakur told the student devotees accompanying his rickshaw during outing in the evening that His health condition may lead to his death or He might work with renewed inspiration and vigour in some different manner. If the history of ‘Neelachal Saraswat Sangh’ is seen after heavenly abode of Shri Shri Thakur in the year 1935, it was Shri Durga Charan Mohanty (later well known in NSS as ‘Bhai’ or ‘Parichalaka’), one of the student devotee of Shri Shri Thakur, was seen as His cherished ‘Manushya’. Shri Durga Charan Mohanty or Parichalak was the most ideal ‘Shishya’ (disciple) among all His followers in Odisha. By virtue of his unique ‘Guru Bhakti’ he had drawn the special attention of Shri Shri Thakur and was bestowed with supreme divine powers by Shri Shri Thakur. Shri Shri Thakur instructed His beloved Shishya (a) to note down His advices given to devotees in Neelachal Kutir or elsewhere in Puri and (b) to tell about His ideologies to His devotees really inquisitive about Him. He was connected with Shri Shri Thakur physically (sthula) and subtly (sukshma) even after Shri Shri Thakur left for His heavenly abode in 1935. Many devotees have seen him in the images of Shri Shri Thakur in many occasions and regarded him as the reincarnation of Shri Shri Thakur. In some instances, he had arranged live and physical appearance of Shri Shri Thakur when required to do so. He was managing the Sangha wonderfully for more than 50 years with his divine powers stemming from Shri Shri Thakur. He was commanding love, respect and obedience of the devotees of NSS as well as Sanyashi of Saraswat Math and devotees of other faiths. He was always maintaining that he was the mouthpiece of Shri Shri Thakur. He was also maintaining that whatever he speaks, writes and suggests for spiritual management of NSS are all the invaluable instructions of Shri Shri Thakur and no one should misunderstand the same as his own. Thus he was maintaining that Shri Shri Thakur as his Master and he and the devotees for that matter are His Dasa. He was avoiding to expose or reveal his spiritual powers lest people will undermine Shri Shri Thakur as their Guru and Ista. Thus he was always retracting his spiritual powers with the help of his spiritual powers. When he was delivering the lectures on spiritual matters, his physical appearance was undergoing changes according to the subject matter. He was the ideologue as a ‘Rishi’ of ancient age and everybody can emulate him as real ‘Adarsha Gruhi’ as excepted by Shri Shri Thakur. Thus the history of NSS is inseparable from the life of Shri Durga Charan Mohanty.
Shri Durga Charan Mohanty was born on 22nd November, 1912 in Biratunga Villgae of Gopa Block, Puri district. He left his mortal human frame on 7th December, 1985 in Cuttack. Even today, he continues as ‘Parichalak’ and the true believers realize his eternal presence. He is still guiding the followers of NSS and his believers whenever they seek his advice on any matter relating to personal practices, problems and management of Sangha.
Having clearly setting out His ideology for NSS, Shri Shri Thakur wanted all his devotees to follow his advices in every step of their lives. The Ist session of NSS was held in October, 1934 in the house of Shri Banamali Bhanja in Puri town. Shri Shri Thakur left his mortal body on 29th November, 1935 in Calcutta. Thereafter there was a lull and no activity of NSS could take place. The Mantra Shishyas of Shri Shri Thakur were conducting their spiritual activity individually and none thought about taking forward the aims and objectives of NSS. Nobody also enquired about Shri Shri Thakur or about his ideology from Shri Durga Charan Mohanty as predicted by Him. In 1940, mysteriously one Shri Kashinath Rath asked him about his experiences with Shri Shri Thakur. He recalled the instruction of Shri Shri Thakur then and took this opportunity to write down about the life history of Shri Shri Thakur and narrated them before Shri Rath as per his request. Later with the interest shown by Shri Rath and other devotees, he wanted to publish the manuscript as the life history of Shri Shri Thakur. Shri Banamali Das, President of NSS made some corrections and the books was published in 1942 under some mysterious circumstances during Ist World War. Shri Chaitanya Charan Das, another dedicated devotee who was then working in ‘The Samaj’ office at Cuttack assisted and work hard in the printing of the book.
This is the turning point in the history of NSS. After publication of the life history of Shri Shri Thakur with the tile “Shri Shri Thakur Nigamanda” many people came to him in order to satiate their spiritual needs. Then started the real NSS in Odisha. On the invitation of the devotees he visited every nook and corner of Odisha from 1942 onwards when the conveyance was very difficult to remote villages in Odisha and guided the devotees to establish Sanghas over there. He compiled the ‘Sangeeta’ written by devotees of Shri Shri Thakur in Bengal as well as devotees in Odisha and published a book titled ‘Nigam Lahari’ in 1944.
Gradually the devotees of NSS increased. He felt the necessity to organize the devotees in order to achieve the common objective of Shri Shbri Thakur expected from the devotees of NSS. He created a ‘Pratinidhi Sabha’ consisting representatives of President and Secretary of six ‘Shakha Sangha’ and 07 other members and trained them on the essential spiritual teachings of Shri Shri Thakur found from different sources. The objective was to form a ‘core group’ for propagation of the ideals of Shri Shri Thakur in Odisha. These teaching of Shri Shri Thakurs found in written form in different sources were compiled then and two books namely ‘ Nigam Upadesh’ and ‘ Nigama Tatwa’ were published by him. In 1948, he published a book named ‘ Neelachal Bani’ from the facts recorded by him duly moderated by facts and information provided by other devotees regarding the ‘Leela’ of Shri Shri Thakur during his stay at Puri. In order to write books to be followed by the followers of NSS and to entertain the devotees coming for his advice, he arranged to build a thatched house nearby his household and established the ‘Asana’ of Shri Shri Thakur over there. The present Kendra Asana Mandir at Biratunga is situated over there.
